Building an Efficient, Scalable Curative Team
The Situation
An oil and gas company engaged Percheron to provide candidates to manage a small curative team. The client was seeking leadership that could introduce greater efficiency, organization, and structure to address an increasing workload. After evaluation, Percheron’s recommended candidate was selected for the role.
The Strategy
Percheron placed an experienced attorney with more than 15 years in the oil and gas industry as Curative Project Manager. The Project Manager began by reviewing the client’s existing workflows and identifying opportunities for improvement. A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was developed to establish consistency and clarity across the department.
Working closely with the client’s existing curative team, the Project Manager focused on organizing day-to-day operations and reducing a significant backlog. As the workload increased, the team gradually expanded to meet demand. The SOP was treated as a living document and updated regularly as processes evolved.
To further improve efficiency, specialized roles were introduced within the team. Certain team members became subject-matter “experts” on specific curative issues, allowing tasks to be completed more quickly and accurately.
The team also implemented bi-weekly virtual meetings. Initially designed to communicate updates from the client, these meetings evolved into a key driver of collaboration. The regular touchpoints helped foster a strong sense of team cohesion despite a fully remote environment. Team members became more comfortable reaching out to one another, and when needed, meetings shifted into working sessions to resolve issues collaboratively.
As both the team and workload continued to grow, a Senior Curative Landman role was created to provide additional leadership and expertise. Additionally, as title issues became more complex, the client asked the Curative Project Manager to designate a dedicated team member to focus solely on researching difficult title issues so that informed next steps could be determined efficiently.
Over time, communication channels expanded beyond the curative team. Regular coordination was established with other client departments to ensure clarity around roles and responsibilities, eliminate duplication of effort, and strengthen cross-functional alignment.
The Success
The client selected Percheron as its long-term partner for curative team support and adopted the Curative Project Manager’s recommendations. Over the course of two and a half years, the curative team doubled in size. All new curative team members were successfully placed through Percheron, resulting in a well-organized, scalable, and highly effective curative operation.
